I meant to post this earlier so people would have advance notice, but somehow it kept slipping my mind. Mommy Points’ post this morning jogged my memory. Bank of America offers its credit and debit card holders free access to a variety of museums on the first full weekend of every month through a program it calls “Museums on Us.” The eligible dates are listed below, but click on the link to get access to a PDF with the entire list of participating museums.
Some of the options are surprisingly good, like the de Young, LACMA, and Legion of Honor in California (and my dad’s favorite, the Tech Museum in San Jose).
The Seattle area doesn’t have quite as many options, but I have been meaning to go to Tacoma at some point.
Megan really wants to see the George Nelson exhibit on architecture at the Bellevue Arts Museum, which is not a participant, so we may choose to do that today since the show ends on Feburary 12 (and we’re traveling next weekend). Apparently they have their own “Free First Friday” program that we missed yesterday. Oh well, I guess actually paying full price now and then isn’t so awful. 😉
Unfortunately the weather this weekend is supremely awesome by Seattle standards, in stark contrast to the Snowpocalypse of a few weeks ago, so I feel guilty about spending my day in a museum. It also almost makes me regret that I chose this time to escape to head to Hawaii. How can you escape the doom and gloom of winter if there is no doom and gloom?
If your schedule permits, head to a free museum this weekend. You could even plan your future mileage runs around the schedule, say, to visit the Portland Art Museum if you got in on the recent United deal between LGA and PDX. It’s certainly something I plan to keep in mind since I only learned about the program late last year.
