The old Continental Airlines had a great reservations and booking system for their website, continental.com, that you will be carried over to the merged United Airlines. At first I was skeptical of Continental’s interface, comfortable as I was with United’s glitchy but familiar features, but I’ve come around to recognize that Continental did have some superior features.
One of those features was their ability (or willingness?) to display award space for a wider range of airline partners. Although some of those partnerships have ended, like one with Virgin Atlantic, the combined carrier has been working to add award space for remaining partners to the Continental reservations system. Although these seats were always available in the past, they were difficult to find, so I consider this a big improvement and a good sign of the priorities for the new United.
Only a few partners are left to be added, and one of the notable ones missing was SWISS. It has great business and first class products, but their meager award space they make available to partners makes them difficult to book. You could have used KVS Tool or ANA to find space, but that would be a slow process of checking one day at a time for the single day in a two month period when seats were available. I am not making this up!
But now that day has come! There is a report from Infinite1K on MilePoint that SWISS award space is starting to appear on continental.com, soon to be rebranded as the new united.com. So if you’ve been meaning to take a trip to Europe and want to try something other than the tried-and-true Lufthansa, or if you just can’t tolerate Lufthansa’s inclined business class seats, this is good news. Continental provides a nice calendar feature, although I’m not sure if I can limit the calendar to display only nonstop flights that would be useful for finding SWISS award space. (You can certainly search for nonstop flights on an individual day, I’m just not sure if that carries over to the calendar.)
This is certainly one of the “changes I like.” 😀
