Yesterday Alaska Airlines announced it had expanded its orders with Boeing to include an additional 10 Boeing 737-900ER aircraft as it continues to retire its fleet of aging 737-400 planes. The new 900ER can hold 25% more passengers and will be equipped with in-seat power outlets and even larger overhead bins that can hold up to six standard carryon bags. The new aircraft also have a much greater range, enabling Alaska to continue expanding its route network with more routes to the East Coast and Midwest.
Expanding its footprint is important, and one reason I’ve become a bit of an Alaska fanboy. One of my old arguments for being a United customer back in the day was that they flew everywhere I wanted to go. Well, now Alaska not only flies everywhere I want to go but also does it non-stop. That includes taking regional propeller planes to visit my family in small towns in Oregon and California as well as upcoming business trips on mainline aircraft to New Orleans, San Diego, Fort Lauderdale, and DC-Reagan.
Win the Keys to an Alaska Airlines Plane!
To celebrate the expansion, Alaska Airlines is running scavenger hunt to find five favorite hot spots in the Seattle area. The first person to each location will win a pair of free tickets anywhere Alaska flies as well as an opportunity to experience one of their simulators. Runners up at each location will are still winners and will be invited aboard a delivery flight from one of the new aircraft departing Boeing Field next year.
The scavenger hunt begins this Friday, October 10, at 6 AM. Fortunately I’ll be up answering your emails! 😛 Follow the Alaska Airlines social media team on Twitter and Instagram and watch for the hashtag #SeattlesAirline to get the clue to each location. Learn more on the Alaska Airlines blog.
