Starwood Preferred Guest is getting in the habit of doling out small amounts of miles to encourage its members to try new ways of interacting with the brand. Last month I explained how you could quickly get 500 miles by updating your room preferences in your online profile. This month SPG is handing out up to 1,5oo Starpoints for using its mobile app to make a reservation. You could earn 500 points per eligible booking — but you must stay by March 31 and pay with an American Express card.
I don’t personally use mobile apps to book travel. I find it extremely limiting because the small form factor makes it difficult to look at all the different rates I’m eligible for, compare locations on a map, and look at competing brands. It’s actually faster to use my phone as a mobile hot spot and do the search on my laptop. But I’m weird.
If you’re less weird than I, this is a nice promo. You have over three months to maximize the promo, and at the generally accepted value of 2.5 cents per point, 1,500 Starpoints are worth about $37.50.
The one caveat is that you have to pay with an American Express card. If you’re in the U.S., pay with your SPG Amex. It’s one of the best general purpose credit cards because the points are worth so much, and it earns bonus points at Starwood hotels. Unfortunately, this card also has foreign transaction fees and is not a good one to use if traveling abroad, and many other Amex cards that don’t have such fees offer less lucrative rewards for hotel stays.
