Now through May 31 you can purchase Avianca LifeMiles and get up to 125% more, bringing down the average price to just 1.47 cents each.
Avianca is a Star Alliance partner that, like United, doesn’t collect fuel surcharges on award tickets. You’ll only need to pay the regular taxes and fees. Their award chart is also a good deal to some destinations, particularly when used for first class awards.
The bonus amount is tiered, so larger purchases get a larger bonus. But all the bonuses are quite large. I wouldn’t necessarily increase your purchase size if you only need a few thousand.
- 2,000 to 50,000 miles — get 100% more
- 51,000 to 100,000 miles — get 115% more
- 101,000 to 150,000 miles — get 125% more
Previous sales have offered higher bonuses, and at one time the base cost for purchased miles was lower. This is certainly not the most lucrative sale that Avianca has ever run. But it is still a generous promotion for those who need to buy more LifeMiles for Star Alliance award travel.
LifeMiles now permits mixed-class awards, which is a huge improvement when trying to secure limited award space on international flights. For example, you can now book a domestic flight within the U.S. to connect to an first class transatlantic flight. However, any interaction with the call center to book, change, or cancel itineraries can be very difficult if you can’t speak Spanish.
There have also been examples in the past of LifeMiles devaluing their award charts shortly after sales. Buying miles from them can be a good deal, but do so with caution.
