I find Starwood Preferred Guest points to be some of the most valuable out there because they can transfer to dozens of airlines with a 25% bonus and be used for great hotels around the world. If you use them correctly, you can easily get 2.5 cents per point of value and in many cases much more.
Collecting these points can be difficult. Aside from staying at the hotel, the only way to earn the points is through the credit card. There is no shopping portal or useful transfer partner (Amex transfers to SPG but at a terrible ratio). Thus, any opportunity collect these points should be jumped on immediately.
SPG launched a new Dashboard for all users. It looks pretty nifty, but thankfully there’s also an opportunity to earn some free points, which are my favorite kind of points!
- Go to this link
- Scroll down the page a little bit and look for text that says “Opt in and earn”. If you see it, click the check box and click “Update Your Account”
For most people, however, this option will not be there. Here’s how you can force the offer to appear:
- Click on your name in the top right corner of the page to open the menu.
- Click “My Profile”
- Scroll down to “Communication Preferences” and click Edit.
- Uncheck the first option called “Starwood Preferred Guest E-Statements” and click “Save Changes”.
- Open this link again in an incognito/private browsing window and log in again.
- The offer should be there to select!
I had to go through the above process myself to get the offer to show, but it worked on the first try. If it doesn’t work for you on the first try, try again!
Other Great Offers
People are finding other great offers on this same Dashboard page. If you scroll down, you will see a section with various offers in rectangular boxes. Check out the first one on my list:
Free night offers are hard to come by, but my offer was a free night after two eligible stays. When I clicked on it to see details and register, I was given some more detail that was mostly positive.
I will earn a free night for every two stays, up to two free nights. That’s a pretty great bonus, and the only downside is that the free nights can only be used at Category 1-5 properties. SPG has 7 Categories, so this still ends up being a very valuable deal. Some Category 5 properties can cost up to 16,000 points per night, so if you use them properly you can get exceptional value.
Others, like Lucky, received an offer for 10,000 bonus points for staying at all 10 different brands. I prefer my offer to his, because mine can potentially be worth the equivalent of 32,000 points.
I highly recommend you check out the new dashboard and see what offers you have available. Did you get an offer better than mine?
