The Freddie Awards are back again this year, celebrating their 25th year! This award is unlike any other awards in the industry and is honestly among one of my FAVORITE awards given out each year for the biggest and the best frequent traveler programs! If you haven’t voted yet, click here and you’ll be redirected to the Freddies’ website.
Some of you are probably asking, what are the Freddies and why should I care?
To give you a brief summary, the Freddie Awards was created in 1988 by Insider Magazine as a way to recognize the travel industry by those who fly and stay the most, the Frequent Traveler (aka You and Me)! The Freddies are open to ANYONE and everyone can vote. I would say that the Freddie Awards are probably one the best and most well-known travel awards in the industry. After all, every airlines and hotels group alike want to be recognized for what their “innovations” and incentive programs for the previous year!
The Freddies are named after Sir Frederick Alfred Laker. Sir Frederick was actually knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his innovations and his transformation of civil aviation and the British economy in the 70s. I won’t bore you with details, but you can find more of them out here.
The Freddies have been around since their conception in 1988 and have been repeated every year since; except in 2010 and 2011 when The Freddies was replaced by the Frequent Travel Awards. Despite these awards being successful, I would argue that they were not as prestigious as the Freddie Awards. Soon after, in 2012, the awards reverted back to the Freddies Awards. And with that, it’s 2013 and now the Freddies are celebrating their 25th year!
Airlines and hotels experts want to know what you, as the frequent traveler like best, and they want to be recognized for it. For example, this year you can vote the BEST Frequent Flyer Promotion. Airline experts will recognize that if they win for a specific promotion, then it’s worth repeating again the next year, or even upping the ante and making it better. Without your, vote the industry analysts will not know what worked and didn’t work for us!
The Freddies are separated into three regions of the world: America, Europe/Africa, and Asia/Pacific. The break down helps airlines and hotels compete from across the globe to be recognized as the best from their region. Last year Air Baltic surprised us all by winning a number of categories from Europe, where Marriott and SPG cleaned house around the world! My recap of last year results can be found here.
Voting is open and will continue until March 31, 2013. Results will be announced April 25, 2013
