Thanks to everyone who showed up on Sunday for dinner at Maggiano’s. We did end up having about 30 people, and everything went smoothly enough thanks to our servers’ willingness to issue separate checks. It sounded like most of you had a great time! …And I certainly learned a lot about how to organize stuff like this in the future.
To help coordinate future events, I’ve created an account on Meetup.com, a kind of social networking community for regional interest groups. It’s completely free to you if you choose to register and join the group, the Frequent Flyers of the Pacific Northwest. Members are able to RSVP for events, comment on future and past activities, and invite others to join who might not be interested enough to be a regular reader of the blog. You can also get email alerts when new events are posted or coming up soon.
We decided at dinner that a regular happy hour is probably the most sensible way to keep meeting. We will meet on every third Thursday for something I’ve whimsically names “Third Thursday Travel Talk.” It will alternate between Seattle and the Bellevue/Kirkland area, and since it will happen every month, you won’t feel too bad if you can’t make it. In the future, try to keep your third Thursday open so you can come join us for drinks!
I will also be adding other activities if people are interested. For example, one reader volunteered to help host something in Portland, and others have talked about holding a miniDO in Seattle during the summer for those who want to fly in from outside the region. The “Pacific Northwest” title is intentionally broad and inclusive.
I’ll be updating you guys with the exact location of the first happy hour closer to the event. For now, just know that it will probably be from 5:30 to 7:30 (or whenever) on Thursday, April 18.
