I got an odd email in my inbox yesterday. KLM is running a contest, and the prize is a free trip to space.
Basically, KLM is launching a sub-orbital balloon, and when it gets high enough that balloon will burst, releasing its payload. You have to guess the maximum height of the balloon and the lateral displacement of the payload once it returns to Earth. I’m not normally a huge fan of entering contests, but the video and simulation KLM put together is pretty cool.
I’m glad that this includes the return journey. The International Space Station is about about 400 kilometers up, or 250 miles. This journey, however, only goes 103 kilometers up, or 64 miles. I don’t have elite status with any SkyTeam carrier, so no 500-mile minimums for me. 🙁 I need every mile I can get!
Here’s my place in space, if you want to compete with me.
