Everyone has their favorite charitable causes, and mine has always been education. I actually got detention more than once for reading books during recess, or choosing Mark Twain over Algebra and vice versa.
Hyatt Thrive, the corporate philanthropy arm of Hyatt Hotels, is running a promotion for the month of April where you can help put more books in the hands of children and get them hooked like I was.
Take Hyatt’s pledge and commit to helping your community thrive. Plant a tree, clean a park, read to a child – it’s up to you. For each pledge taken by April 30, Hyatt will donate a book to a child in need – up to 35,000 books.
So far Hyatt has only donated 196 books, or about half of one percent and on track for a measly 3,000 in the entire month. With over 34,804 left to go, I think we can all do our part to volunteer in our communities and encourage Hyatt to give more books to more children.
As a graduate student I volunteered for an outreach program at the University of Washington that visits local schools and participates in annual events like Brain Awareness Week on campus and the Life Sciences Research Weekend at Pacific Science Center. We find ways to take discoveries in neuroscience and psychology and make them more approachable to children. Maybe not all of them will get a Ph.D. in biology, but I like to think a few are inspired to work hard in school now that they know what kinds of things they can do when they grow up.
Books offer that same sense of wonderment, exposing children to new opportunities and ideas. One of my favorite books, which, sadly, I can no longer find, was a cut-away picture book with diagrams of sailing ships, cars, and even a Boeing 747! So I encourage you to join Hyatt’s challenge, and I’ll be including their badge on my blog for the rest of April to remind others.
