A few thousand of you subscribe to this blog via RSS, and I couldn’t be happier. But until today my RSS feed was managed by Google’s FeedBurner service, of which I’ve grown increasingly skeptical.
News that Google wil be closing down Reader make it more likely than ever that they will also shut down Feedburner. I don’t use many of Feedburner’s more technical features, but the fact that Google has been dropping support for them (and removing its own opportunity to generate revenue) indicate that its days are numbered.
Today I migrated all email subscribers to a paid service called FeedBlitz (I pay for it, not you!). I’ve also instructed Feedburner to redirect to FeedBlitz so those of you who subscribed via Feedburner should still be getting updates by RSS. But as a I said, those days may be numbered. I encourage you to update your RSS reader directly with the new FeedBlitz URL instead.
This may also be a good time for you to find a new RSS reader. Google Reader will be shutting down on July 1. I have not found a replacement I am perfectly happy with, but Tom’s Hardware has a good summary of ten alternatives. The most popular ones (which my analytics tell me readers are already using to access this site) are Feedly, Flipboard, and NetVibes.
If you don’t want an RSS feed, you can also choose to subscribe to email updates. You’ll get just one email every day with a summary of that day’s posts. It can be more convenient than logging into some other service when you don’t need up-to-the-minute reports on everything I write.
Finally, don’t forget you can get updates through social media:
- Join almost 3,000 people on Twitter who follow me @HackMyTrip
- Join over 1,000 people on Twitter who follow Amol @PointstoPointB
- Join over 1,000 people on Facebook who like Hack My Trip
Sometimes these social media discussions are inane, sometimes Amol and I answer questions, and sometimes I just share a good deal or contest I found elsewhere but don’t want to write about. Hopefully you’ll find them worthwhile or at least amusing. As I start rolling out new contests and giveaways this summer, remember that anyone who likes or follows Hack My Trip is eligible for bonus entries.
