Lucky from One Mile at a Time posted American Airlines’s official statement regarding the devaluation, which basically says that fuel surcharges should not have been added to award bookings. It was all a mistake. That means that, for now, there is no devaluation of AA miles and things will continue under the normal taxes/fees rules.
I think there’s an important lesson here. American Airlines is fully within the rules of their program to make massive adjustments like this without any notice. That doesn’t mean they should, and it’s actually a huge slap in the face to their most loyal customers in my opinion, but they can. And it can literally happen overnight. I recommended in my previous post on devaluations to book your trips ASAP, because miles are always losing value.
So like I said before, don’t save points…go use them! Who knows what they’ll be worth one year, one month, or even one hour from now?
