US Airways announced today a limited-time promotion that effectively lets you buy Dividend Miles for only 1.13 cents each (HT to View from the Wing). That’s a very good deal for a program with award chart gems such as U.S. to North Asia (e.g., Tokyo or Hong Kong) for only 90,000 miles round-trip in business class. You could buy the miles through this promotion and fly business class for roughly $1,000. Even if you only travel within the domestic U.S., a 25,000 mile saver award in economy would cost about $280. This actually makes a lot of sense for me since tickets to visit Megan’s family are usually above $500, and we can still fly United — a Star Alliance partner.
There are some limits. This promotion is only for shared miles, which means you need to have some miles already that you can share with someone else. US Airways will double the miles that you share, and you can share up to 50,000. That means I can share 50,000 miles with Megan, and she will receive 100,000 miles. She can then turn around and share 50,000 miles with me, and I’ll have 100,000.
The way to take advantage of this deal is to find a willing friend or family member to transfer both ways like I plan with Megan. Or — if you’ve been looking for an excuse to consolidate your miles — just make the transfer one way. But it’s one of the best prices all year for “buying” US Airways miles.
Finally, you can only make this transfer between now and October 15, and your account must be at least 12 days old. So if you only have one account and need to set up a second with a friend, do it today. That will leave you with 3-4 days to complete your transfers before the promotion ends.
