SPG’s Starpoints are among the most valuable loyalty currency because they can be redeemed for quality hotel stays AND those award stays count toward elite status AND you can also transfer the points to a variety of other airline loyalty programs. Now, you can buy more of them at a discounted price of up to 25% off when you purchase between 13,000 and 20,000 points (fewer points earn a smaller or no bonus).
Starwood typically sells points at a discount twice a year. I last took advantage of this offer in spring when the same offer was available so Megan and I could use them for our honeymoon stay at the St. Regis Bali, quite possibly one of the best hotels in the world. Normally it costs about $650 per night, and even with points we redeemed about 130,000 for five nights. That’s a roughly fair redemption since I value these points at 2.5 cents each, but certainly not a great one. I don’t care. We had a great trip and the ability to buy these points to top off my account made the difference between staying there or somewhere else.
With the discounted price, you can expect to pay $525 for 20,000 points, or 2.625 cents each. Yes, a little more than where I value them, but not much more. I certainly do not recommend buying them at the regular price of 3.5 cents each.
I think it’s a good deal if you have a use for them coming up. Even if you won’t use them for a hotel stay as I did, you can transfer them to Star Alliance carriers other than United to prepare for the day when United imposes its new two-tier award chart. As I explained this morning, it isn’t all bad. ANA and Lufthansa each have some nice sweet spots, and Singapore’s KrisFlyer often saves the most award space for its own members.
Keep in mind there is a limit of 20,000 purchased points one account can receive each year. That limit applies whether you buy them for your own account or if you buy them and gift them to another person. However, you can combine points across two accounts if you have lived at the same address for more than 30 days. That means having already bought 20,000 for myself I can buy another 20,000 for Megan’s account and transfer them to mine.
If you act quick, you could change the address on your friend or family member’s account now and still wait out the 30-day period before this deal expires. You can purchase points at a discount through December 13. Because the purchase is processed by Points.com, it will not count as SPG spend; use whatever credit card you normally choose for non-bonus purchases.
