American Express has had a tab called “Amex Offers for You” for quite some time once you log in to your online account. The offers are often good in terms of the free money, but are usually at stores that aren’t particularly useful for most people as they’d have to go out of their way to take advantage of them at particular stores. In recent months, however, that’s completely changed.
In fact, these days some of the offers are really good, especially for manufactured spenders. Here’s a few deals that you can/should take advantage of.
AT&T – Spend $150, get $150 back
I talked about this earlier and so have many others. This is a great deal either for yourself or to split with a friend if you don’t have AT&T service (see my previous post on a strategy for this). This offer is available for Business Cards only.
Amazon.com – Spend $15, get $15 back
Does this need any explanation? They’re literally giving you $15 at a website all of us use to shop at. Use my Amazon referral link if you want to help me out a bit!
Office Depot/OfficeMax – Spend $50, get $10 back
Perfect for manufactured spenders! Here’s a tip – you can actually split payment onto multiple cards at these office stores. That means you can buy a $200 Visa gift card for a price of $206.95 including the fee, but if you have 4 Amex cards you should put $50 on the first 3 and the last $56.95 on the last. You’ll earn $40 in statement credits from Amex for a total profit of $33.05. Load that Visa gift card to Bluebird or cash it out another way, and you’ve also manufactured a few points.
Walmart – Spend $15, get $5 back (online only)
It’s not convenient for me to shop at Walmart so I usually don’t, but why not take advantage of a free $5? You can’t use this for manufactured spending (to my knowledge) but Walmart sells a lot of things and I’m sure you can find something to buy. Online only.
Conrad Hotels – Spend $400, get $75 back
I’m generally an advocate of not paying this much cash for a hotel, but if you happen to be doing so at a Conrad then why not get back some cash?
Lots of 2x Points Retailers
I suppose “lots” is relative, but there are several that many people seem to completely skip over. They include:
- Neiman Marcus (online)
- Williams-Sonoma (online)
- Pottery Barn (online)
- GAP (and related brands) (online)
- Bergdorf Goodman (online)
- Mark and Graham
These are good if you’re doing holiday shopping online using your Amex card but nothing to go out of your way for.
You should also look into any restaurants that are listed on our Amex offers, because many are running special promotions for gift card bonuses during the holidays. Let’s use the restaurant PF Chang’s as an example.
- Amex offer: Spend $50, get $10 back.
- PF Chang’s gift card offer: Buy a $100 gift card, get a $20 bonus gift card.
You can combine these two to buy a $100 PF Chang’s gift card and split the payment onto two Amex credit cards for $50 each. You’ll end up with $120 in PF Chang’s gift cards for just $80 in spend, or a nice 33% discount for your money.
American Express and their partners are in the holiday mood and just giving out free money, so make sure you take advantage of it. For all these offers you’ll need to log on to your account, click over to “Amex Offers for You” and activate each offer with a simple click. Make sure you do it for each Amex card you have. Note that some of these offers are targeted.
