Because fuel surcharges don’t really have much to do with the price of fuel, it’s not surprising that many airlines have kept them steady even as crude oil prices have plummeted below $50 a barrel. But Alaska Airlines is using the news to design a new promotion for winter and spring travel. If you book by midnight on January 14, you can use the discount code FUELSAVINGS to save 20% off flights on Tuesday or Wednesday, or 10% off flights on Thursday through Monday.
This offer applies to nearly any Alaska Airlines-operated itinerary. There are a few blackout dates, but most of the limitations don’t significantly impact my plans:
- The discount is only valid for discounted economy class fares in L, V, K, G, T, or R booking class. This letter will show up in your search results on Alaska’s website, and you should see a little symbol anyway if the discount has been applied correctly.
- Travel to Prudhoe Bay is not included.
- The discount is only valid for travel from January 21 – February 11, February 23 – March 11, and April 14 – May 13.
Discounted fares can still be upgraded using MVP Gold Guest Upgrades or through the complimentary elite upgrade process near departure.
Also note that this discount doesn’t qualify as a true decrease in fare, so you may not be able to claim Alaska’s best fare guarantee. But if your travel is more than 60 days out (for any Mileage Plan member) or if you have MVP Gold status or higher, you can still cancel your ticket to claim a full credit (not a cash refund) and then use that credit to rebook at the discounted price. Just be sure to check if the fare is actually lower before you try this.
