SPG Points might be my absolute favorite currency because of the value and flexibility they present. Unfortunately, as you probably recognized after reading my Guide to SPG, it’s also one of the most difficult currencies to acquire.
SPG has come up with more and more partnerships recently in a bid to expand their presence around the world. SPG partnered with Caesars in Las Vegas, but that relationship is very weak and doesn’t present much value, especially when you consider Hyatt’s relationship with MGM. SPG is also partnered with Delta and Emirates in differing capacities, providing opportunities to earn more coveted SPG points.
Now, SPG has teamed up with Uber in a partnership that may be a bit more useful to many of us. Here’s what you can earn after you have one qualifying stay at SPG and have registered for the promotion:
- Earn one SPG point per dollar spent on Uber rides up to $10,000 spent per year.
- Preferred SPG members (meaning members without status) earn 2 SPG points per dollar spent on Uber rides taken during an SPG hotel stay.
- Gold & Platinum SPG members earn 3 SPG points per dollar spent on Uber rides taken during an SPG hotel stay.
- “Super” Platinum members with 75+ nights earn 4 SPG points per dollar spent on Uber rides taken during an SPG hotel stay.
There are two items that bear repeating: You must have one eligible stay credited to your account before you are eligible for this promotion, and the elevated earning rates are for days of SPG stays only. Don’t forget you need to register for this promotion as well.
I think this is a pretty strong promotion, aside from the $10K limit. Hopefully none of us spend over $10K a year on Uber but I wouldn’t doubt that there are some that do.
One annoyance is that once again, Platinum members are treated the same as Gold members. This isn’t anything new for SPG, but definitely makes Platinums like myself wonder what the point is of earning elevated status. It certainly doesn’t encourage me to stay even more with them to attain “Super” Platinum status.
If you haven’t signed up for Uber yet, feel free to use my referral link. We both get $20 out of it!
