It’s been a long wait but Uber will finally begin pickups at Los Angeles International Airport starting at 8am Pacific time today, January 21st, 2016. The announcement was made via e-mail yesterday afternoon…
As the e-mail notes, Uber has long been able to drop off at LAX, but pickups were limited to UberBLACK towncar-style cars. But now, after a long back and forth with the Los Angeles City Council and the California Public Utilities Commission (which regulates car-sharing services in the state), Uber has finally received approval for pickups using their classic “UberX” service.
Oddly, Uber has actually lagged Lyft on this front, as Lyft has already been making LAX pickups for the last few weeks, having received their license for pickups back in December . Both companies will make pickups on the upper Departures level at the designated “Ride Sharing” points, so when arriving you’ll need to go upstairs in order to catch your Uber or Lyft car.
Under the terms of their licenses, both Uber and Lyft are charged a $4 fee for pickups at LAX, which is passed along to customers. Otherwise, the cost for these services are the same as anywhere else in Los Angeles.
With both competitors engaged at the airport, you now have more options for ground transportation services than ever before when landing in L.A.
