With promotions roughly twice a year, you can purchase gift cards for Fairmont Hotels & Resorts and get a 20% bonus. This represents a ~17% discount and could make it worthwhile to stay at a hotel that is not part of one of the larger chains. Look at it as an upfront discount rather than getting a free stay on points later down the road. (HT to Loyalty Lobby)

Furthermore, Fairmont has a strong presence in Canada where hotels might be cheaper for U.S. travelers interested in taking advantage of the strong USD (currently USD$0.79 = CAD$1.00).
This promotion is only available on May 4 from 10 AM to 1 PM PDT for the purchase of e-gift cards, but there aren’t limited quantities to worry about like with Daily Getaways. Rather, you just have to plan to make your purchase during the window. Only one transaction per person is eligible for the bonus, but you may purchase multiple cards. Each card can have a maximum value of $2,000 in either USD or CAD. More information about Fairmont gift cards is available online.
There are several Fairmont properties I’m interested in visiting, among them the Orchid on Hawaii’s Big Island, the Chateau Lake Louise near Banff, the Empress in Victoria, and the Savoy in London. In fact, the Orchid is only $200 a night if you want to travel over Labor Day weekend, when the pool will be under construction. I’ll be reviewing my travel plans for the next year before the sale begins.
