SPG’s Newest Promo Really Annoys Me

by Kevin Hanson

Starwood has just announced a new promotion for the second quarter. Stay three nights at an SPG property and get a free night at a Starwood resort, with no cap to the amount you can earn (except the number of nights during the promo period).  A list of all the redeemable resorts can be found here.

This is a great promotion, and I’ll likely use it to snag a weekend at a St. Regis somewhere, hopefully the one in Princeville, Kauai or the Punta Mita resort near Puerto Vallarta. Night credits will expire at the end of the year, and they are only good for hotels that are offering standard rooms, as opposed to places with upgraded rooms. Another “gotcha” is that nights can only be redeemed at resorts, rather than hotels. I would have loved to use this for my stay in Stockholm in September, but no dice!

I’m really excited about the promotion, but the thing that annoys me is that it is based on stays, not nights. That means I’m going to have play the retarded game of checking in and out of properties every day when I’m on business trips. Don’t get me wrong… I’ll do it. I’ll “play the game” that Starwood is making me play so I can get some free nights at a sweet place, but I’d really prefer if they based this thing on nights!
