Banana Split! New Enhancements to United’s P.S. Service

by Kevin Hanson
Last updated April 20, 2019

I end up flying P.S. about two or three times a month, and thus I notice whenever they make a tweak or change. United seems to constantly tweak the service. Sometimes it gets better – sometimes worse. I noticed a few changes on my business class flight a couple days ago, and I think these are all for the better.

a bowl of ice cream with whipped cream on top

United has traditionally served ice cream for dessert on P.S. flights, but this time they had more options for the sundae. As the flight attendant began to ask me what I wanted on my ice cream, I cut her off and said, “Everything!” When I got my sundae, I was surprised to see bananas in the sundae. Now i know for it to be an “official” banana split, there needs to be a banana split in half, but I think this still counts :-).

Blankets have been a contentious issue on United. They used to have a decent blanket in first class, but then after the merger with Continental, they started bringing the Continental blankets sheets to United. In regard to the P.S. flight, they used to use blankets similar to those on United Domestic First. Then in 2008, United announced they would have co-branded Westin “heavenly” products on their P.S. flights. Then after a while, the promotion “expired” and they reverted back to crappy blankets. On Monday’s flight, I had a nice, big, white fluffy blanket. I hope they don’t take these away from us a second time!

And then I noticed something odd, which may just have been the result of people leaving extra stuff in the bathroom, but when I got on the flight, I noticed an extra bottle of air freshener, some bandaids, and a few other health products. Did UA put this stuff here? Or did another passenger just leave it? I thought it may have been a passenger, but when I used the restroom again before landing, it was all still there… Anyhow, seemed odd. Maybe UA is giving us more bathroom amenities. Maybe not.
