Initial thoughts on my first trip to Africa

by Brad
Last updated January 4, 2019

As I mentioned previously, last week returned from my first trip to the African continent.  I am planning a complete trip report, but I’ll try to finish a few other reports first. Here are a few comments and some photos from my trip.

My first view of Africa from the air:

Lagos airport wasn’t as bad as I feared, and bribe requests were laughed off.  It was not a great place to have a layover while in transit, but once I was able to get online, the time passed much more quickly.

The United flight on the 787 from Houston was delayed due to maintenance, so I missed my planned (prepaid and non-refundable) connection to Accra.  I had to buy another ticket and wait a few more hours.  It was painful to watch that plane pull away without me on it.  But I was too late to check in.

My experience in Ghana was excellent.  The country is really beautiful, and the people I encountered were friendly.  The wedding and related activities were lots of fun.

My first longhaul flight in United BusinessFirst on the 787: The seat was comfortable, if a bit short for a  6+ foot person.  The food and service were firmly in the ‘meh’ categtory.  I still feel this was a good use of GPU.  I was especially glad to have bulkhead seat, since the full foot cutout helps it feel more spacious.

Shortly after arriving at the gate in Lagos:
