Review: Qantas Business Class, Wellington to Sydney

by Brad
Last updated January 27, 2019

The return portion of my New Zealand trip started early Monday morning in Wellington. I took Uber from my hotel to the airport. There was no traffic, so I was at the airport quickly. I visited the busy Qantas lounge there briefly before boarding. Another great lounge, especially for an outstation, but I am not planning a review. Soon, boarding was called in the lounge, and a bunch of folks headed to the boarding gate for the Sydney flight.

Wellington to Sydney on a Qantas Boeing 737

Unlike the Qantas A330 on the eastbound journey from Sydney, the return flight was on a 737. I realize there isn’t likely the demand for the larger plane from Wellington. A noticeable step down with no flat bed seats, but still a nice flight, especially in Business Class. Qantas service shines even on a less premium hard product.

I chose seat 2F, the window in the middle of the 3 row cabin. The seat had a wrapped blanket an a large pillow. I didn’t use either one. Seat is similar to what US Domestic first class used to be, 22 inches wide, with 37 inches of pitch, and there is also a leg rest. Some flights have IFE screens, and others allow for streaming entertainment.  I watched some Australian TV programs I wasn’t likely to find elsewhere to pass the time during the flight.

Given the morning departure time, breakfast was served relatively soon after departure. Here is the menu:

There is also an extensive drink list, which was the same as the menu for my outbound flight:

My breakfast began with the smoothie, which Qantas calls an energizer.  Certainly refreshing.

After this, the tray was brought out piece by piece, with a bread plate, butter dish, and room for the yoghurt. I opted for the cheddar and chive scone.  Delicious. None of the main course items were really drawing me in, since I already snacked in the lounge before departure, and I knew I would have extensive dining opportunities to come in the Qantas First Class Lounge after landing in Sydney. The fruit plate was sufficient for my needs.

Qantas 737 Business Class from Wellington to Sydney

The flight is blocked at 3:45, and this time seemed to go by pretty fast. After the meal, I continued watching some shows on the IFE, and dozed off. The views over the Tasman Sea were limited due to cloud cover. Soon we were on approach into Sydney, and my fun weekend in New Zealand was over. Next another visit to the Qantas First Class Lounge in Sydney, and then my flight back to Dallas, and then home.

This report is part of my long weekend trip to New Zealand.
