Thompson Hotels Joins World of Hyatt

by Brad
Last updated March 27, 2019

As of today, Hyatt is announcing the introduction of Thompson Hotels as the first of several independent brands joining the World of Hyatt loyalty program. Others include Joie de Vivre, Alila, and Destination Hotels. These additions will allow World of Hyatt members more options to choose from on their next stay plus the ability to earn and redeem points and enjoy in-hotel benefits.

Eight participating Thompson Hotels will be the first to join starting March 28, 2019, located throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. These properties include Gild Hall and The Beekman in New York City; The Cape in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; Thompson hotels in Chicago, Nashville, Seattle, Toronto, and the new Thompson Zihuatanejo on Mexico’s Pacific Coast.

Following Hyatt’s November 2018 acquisition of Two Roads, Thompson Hotels is the first of four brands being added to World of Hyatt. The Joie de Vivre brand will join on May 15, and the others will join later. Scott has visited the Thompson in Seattle, which has a unique, angular design just across from Pike Place Market, and has previously stayed at the L’Auberge del Mar in La Jolla, CA, one of the Destination Hotels. This list definitely includes a number of quality hotels, yet they should be more affordably priced than the Small Luxury Hotels of the World partnership announced last year.

Mark Vondrasek, chief commercial officer, Hyatt Hotels Corporation says,

We are committed to quickly integrating these distinctive brands into Hyatt’s portfolio, allowing our guests to discover more unique destinations and connect to exclusive and rewarding experiences across their travel journeys. We are thrilled to welcome Thompson Hotels as the first to join World of Hyatt, with Joie de Vivre Hotels to quickly follow.

How many new properties are joining Hyatt?

The integration of these new brands into Hyatt’s portfolio throughout 2019 will provide 60+ hotels in 20+ new markets. This includes Vail, Colorado; Ubud, Bali, Indonesia; Zihuatanejo, Mexico, and more. In addition, these four brands will expand Hyatt’s resort offerings by 60 percent. This includes legendary resorts such as Ventana Big Sur, an Alila Resort in California; Alila Villas Uluwatu in Bali, Indonesia; The Cape, a Thompson Hotel in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico; and Sunriver Resort, A Destination Hotel in Sunriver, Oregon. Hyatt guests can also take advantage of 40+ new spas, 20+ new golf courses and 10 new ski destinations across these brands in Hyatt’s portfolio.

Promotions Available at Thompson Hotels

World of Hyatt is offering a new offer to encourage the trial of these brands. Members can earn 2,000 Bonus Points for their first qualifying stay at participating hotels in each of the new brands, plus a free night when they try all four brands.

Additionally, all World of Hyatt credit card holders will earn an additional 4x Bonus Points when spending at Thompson Hotels, and Hyatt credit card holders will earn an additional 3x Bonus Points. Eligible stays at participating hotels begin once each brand participates in World of Hyatt and are valid through December 31, 2019. No registration required. Full terms for these offers are below.

Final Thoughts

These properties are likely pretty high end, but having held top tier status with Hyatt for years, I appreciate more options. Many of these properties look like promising choices for points redemptions. I’m glad Hyatt is continuing to expand, remember that Hyatt also inked a deal with Small Luxury Hotels of the World a few months ago. These are small additions to a Hyatt’s small portfolio, but I prefer quality to quantity. Especially given how poorly another mega-merger at hotels is proceeding even now.  Looking at you Marriott….
