Hyatt Regency O’Hare Closed Through May

by Brad
Last updated March 19, 2020

Travel plans are up in the air for everyone right now, and admittedly not a top priority in this crazy time. As I’ve discussed, I’m grounded for the short term. My next fun trip where I’m still hoping it could happen starts in late May. We are departing early, so we are staying the night before at the Hyatt Regency O’Hare. Today I received notification that my booking was cancelled. More than 2 months out.  This was a surprise.  I then noticed a message in my junk mail that mentioned the hotel closing through May.

Hyatt Regency O’Hare closed until May 31, 2020

Looking at availability, the hotel is selling rooms tonight, March 19, but then is zeroed out through May. Wow. For those that aren’t aware, this hotel is huge, with over 1000 rooms. I like it’s unique architecture, and close proximity to O’Hare. I don’t see anything on the hotel’s website yet, but, no rooms are available for booking.

There are plenty of other hotels nearby that still show availability. For now, I rebooked at the Hyatt Rosemont nearby. Not my preference, but it is fine, and also convenient to O’Hare. I very much hope my trip is still on for late May, but I’m not going to make any predictions.

Watch your reservations

A cancellation like this shouldn’t be a surprise. Even under the assumption that travel resumes on even a low level in in a few months, how many businesses that are dependent on travelers stay open in the meantime? Both hotels and airlines are extending more flexibility to travelers, in the midst of the COVID-19 global pandemic. I recommend keeping reservations active until you are certain they can’t be used. My theory is that this will allow for the best options in case things cancel. I’m quite surprised that the Hyatt Regency O’Hare closed for such a long period, but I doubt it will be alone in this drastic measure.
