EU Considers Banning US Citizens Through September

by Rocky Horan
Last updated April 23, 2020

Around the world, many countries have closed borders to travelers. Most countries are allowing trade to continue to flow, but not travelers. To slow the spread of the virus, countries around the world have closed their borders to travelers. In Europe, Europe’s Schengen zone has closed their borders for 30 days through April 17, 2020. Japan has restricted entry from 73 countries, The US has banned visitors from Europe, and more. Meanwhile, Sweden is open for business.

Countries continue to grapple with the question, when they should reopen and when life should return to normal? The question also remains, when should visitors be allowed back? Every country has their own opinion and plan.

During a videoconference with trade unions, French President Macron proposed that the Schengen region should remain closed to visitors from the US until the end of September 2020. He said the idea is being considered by Schengen members as the pandemic “did not affect all countries at the same time” BFMTV reported.

I personally would hate to see travel restricted in Europe through the busy Summer season. This will continue to devastate the travel industry. For example, American Airlines has already cut 25 routes to Europe this summer, and may have to cut more.  Keeping citizens healthy is a top priority of most governments.  Yet selfishly, I would love to visit Europe later this summer to attend a wedding. Although I also know that my selfish reasoning, isn’t a good enough reason to reopen travel for all.

Currently, travel restrictions are in place for several countries. If you plan to travel any time soon, check with the US State department. This is your best guide to travel restrictions for US Citizens. Time will ultimately decide what the EU plans to do in regards to visitors from the United States. If you’re planning a summer vacation, pay attention to ever changing policies.
