A Nostalgic Look Back At Hertz Rent A Car (1950s through 1970s)

by Steve Case
Last updated January 3, 2023

Today, from Travel Codex, a look at the lighter side of travel. Before bankruptcy, Hertz was the innovator and leader in car rentals.

Here is a travel blog that will put a smile on your face and hopefully make you laugh.  We have gotten used over the years to the multitude of options when it comes to vehicle rentals. From Sprinter Van Rentals that can make for a fun and easy trip, to RVs and even more specialized vehicles for more technical treks, there is no shortage of fun options one can rely on to take a break from it all. As we drive down Memory Lane, you will see how Hertz evolved from the 1950s through the 1970s.  Here is a list of greatest hits seen on the video below:

  • “Let Hertz Put You In The Driver’s Seat” where people magically land in a convertible driving down the road.  Who needs to wait at the airport for a car?
  • Hertz making fun of competitor Avis Car Rental slogan – “We Try Harder”.
  • Hertz commercial bloopers.
  • First free, unlimited miles.  Yes, you used to have to pay by the mile.
  • Yes, you can rent a Ford Escort for the low rate of just $29.99 per day.  Who could forget the Ford Fairmont?
  • Take up to 20 months to pay for your car rental.  I like that.
  • O. J. Simpson running through the airport, leaping over suitcases and velvet ropes to get to his Hertz car.
  • Hertz #1 Club – first car rental loyalty program.
  • Hertz #1 Express Service – who wants to wait in line to return your car when your flight is waiting for you?
  • Arnold Palmer vs. O. J. Simpson on what Hertz means to them.  “Less money” or “more reliable”?  You be the judge.

Enjoy!

About Steve Case

Steve is a life-long avgeek and a points and miles player. The photo is from my first premium, international award flight in 2012. That is all it took, I was hooked. I used my airline mile and hotel points to travel well and cheap. I am truly an "out-of-the-box" traveler which has enriched my travel experiences.
