Cruise Ship Hits Iceberg in Alaska

by Rocky Horan
Last updated June 28, 2022

A Norwegian Cruise ship transiting near the Hubbard Glacier hit an Iceberg and sustained considerable damage on Saturday. The ship is still operational and is not in danger of sinking and all crew members and passengers are safe. However, the ship did have to cancel the remainder of the sailing after an extended overnight stop in Juneau.

The Norwegian sun, is a 2000-passenger epic class cruise ship. While transiting near Hubbard Glacier the ship struck an iceberg, or what they call a growler. A growler is an iceberg less than 2 meters (6.6 feet) across that floats with less than 1 meter (3.3 feet) showing above water. Basically the size of a truck or grand piano.  As the time of the collision, the ship was operating in dense fog with limited visibility.

After the impact the ship diverted to back to Juneau at a slower speed.  The ship skipped its scheduled Skagway stop on Sunday and reached Juneau on Sunday night at around 5 p.m. Surprisingly, guests were not made aware of what the impact was until Monday morning.

Back in Juneau, Coast Guard divers assessed the damage to the 2,000-passenger cruise ship on Monday. The cruise ship was moored at Franklin Street Dock in Juneau until Monday afternoon when it left port. At the time, the Norwegian Sun was making it slowly back to Seattle. Damaged, but operational. The rest of the cruise is canceled and guests will receive a refund. The next sailing is also canceled so Norwegian can make necessary repairs to the ship.
Norwegian is working with guests to accommodate those who cruises are affected by this incident.
