Aurora Expeditions: Great for Active Travelers

by Rocky Horan
Last updated January 29, 2026

Antarctica isn’t a place you go to sit back and watch from a balcony. For many travelers, the dream is to step onto the ice and make an continental landing. When you go to Antarctic you get to feel the crunch of snow underfoot, paddle past icebergs, hike ridgelines, and come face-to-face with wildlife in one of the most remote places on Earth. If that sounds like your idea of adventure, Aurora Expeditions stands out as one of the best choices for active travelers looking to maximize their time off the ship.

Rather than a traditional cruise experience, Aurora Expeditions operates true expedition-style voyages which are designed for people who want to explore, move, learn, and immerse themselves in Antarctica as fully as conditions allow.

Expedition, Not a Cruise

There are several companies now taking travelers to Antarctica. Making it more accessible than ever. Aurora Expeditions was founded on a simple idea: Antarctica should be experienced, not observed from afar. This philosophy shapes every aspect of their trips, from ship design to daily scheduling.

Unlike large cruise ships that carry hundreds or even thousands of passengers, Aurora’s small-ship approach allows for greater flexibility, faster landings, and more frequent shore excursions. With fewer guests onboard, everyone can rotate through activities efficiently, meaning more time on land and less time waiting. All three of Aurora’s ship travel with 130 guests in polar regions. It doesn’t matter if you’re on the , Sylvia Earle, Douglas Mawson or Greg Mortimer. You’re never going to travel in large groups.

For active travelers, this makes a huge difference. You’re not limited to a single short landing each day. Instead, Aurora aims for multiple excursions daily, weather and ice permitting—often combining landings with Zodiac cruises or hikes.

If you’re consider traveling with Aurora Expeditions, please contact me. All of our bookings come with a $250 per person, $500 per cabin onboard credit. Stackable with all of Aurora Expeditions promotions. Plus a bonus 10% savings on select sailings!

Maximizing Time Ashore

One of the biggest advantages of traveling with Aurora Expeditions is how much emphasis they place on getting guests off the ship and into the environment. In antarctica you get MORE time off the ship when there’s less people you have to share it with! As all landing sites in Antarctica and Svalbard have a maximum number of 100 people at a time (some are even more restrictive), means less people with you is a good thing and more time on land.

On a typical expedition day in Antarctica, guests may experience:

  • A morning Zodiac cruise through ice-filled bays
  • A continental landing with guided hikes
  • An afternoon landing at a different site
  • Wildlife viewing at close range
  • Optional polar plunges (for the brave) at least once during every trip
  • Added activities like kayaking, snowshoeing, or snorkeling

Aurora’s operational efficiency means landings are quick, well-organized, and purposeful. The expedition team works continuously to assess weather, sea ice, and wildlife conditions so that time is spent exploring, not waiting. On my recent Antarctica Complete trip, I was off the ship often for 2-4 hours every time, twice per day! It was magical to be offer the ship and exploring. Also with fewer people it meant we were able to explore more. I visited stops where I had previously visited with other companies, but as we were fewer people, we had more space to roam. The expedition team also allowed us to roam further, because they didn’t have to cycle people through in groups. It was AWESOME!

For active travelers, this translates to longer walks, more challenging hikes, and deeper exploration, rather than short strolls near the shoreline. The best example from my most recent trip. A 6km hike over the mountains of South Georgia from Fortuna Bay to Stromness Bay. A hike that is made famous by Shackleton.

Options for Different Energy Levels

Aurora Expeditions is particularly well-known for offering graded activity options during landings. Rather than a one-size-fits-all approach, guests are often grouped by interest and ability.

You might choose:

  • Gentle shoreline walks with wildlife observation
  • Moderate hikes to elevated viewpoints
  • Longer, more demanding hikes for strong walkers

This flexible structure allows active travelers to push themselves while still accommodating others onboard. If you want to climb higher, walk farther, and explore deeper into the landscape, Aurora’s expedition model supports that ambition. Want to sleep in and stay on the ship. You can do that too! Want a leisure stroll or a zodiac ride instead, yup you can do that too! This is your trip and Aurora is ready to match your needs.

Adventure Activities Beyond Landings & Zodiac Cruises

For travelers who want even more than hiking, Aurora Expeditions offers optional adventure activities on select voyages, depending on itinerary and conditions. Or you can choose the Antarctica Active trip where you can try them all!

Travelers can sign up for a fee pre trip for the following add on activities. When you select an add on Activity, the goal is to get you off the ship and doing this once or twice a day. Note that the activity may replace your landing, or may be in addition to the landing or zodiac cruise.

  • Sea kayaking for more experienced kayakers
  • paddling for novice travelers who want to adventure on the water
  • Snorkeling or diving in polar waters (on specific departures)
  • Snowshoeing – Climb mountains and glaciers and go where no one else can!
  • Camping on the Antarctic ice (available on special itineraries and can be combined with other activities)

These experiences are specifically designed for guests who want to engage physically and mentally with the Antarctic environment, rather than simply observe it. Aurora also puts together photography-focused zodiacs and citizen science zodiacs to allow travelers to get the most of their experiences.

Small Groups, Big Experiences

International regulations limit how many people can be ashore at once in Antarctica. With smaller ships, Aurora Expeditions can ensure every guest gets meaningful time on land, not just a brief turn. Also smaller ships can do more in Antarctica. You can visit more landing sites, research bases, and the ship can maneuver in ways that other ships cannot. In Antarctica smaller is better!

Smaller groups also mean

  • Less crowding at landing sites
  • Better wildlife encounters
  • More flexibility to adjust plans
  • A stronger sense of camaraderie among travelers
  • More time off the ship, more time experiencing nature

For active travelers, this creates a more personal, immersive experience. Where you feel like part of an expedition team rather than a passenger list.

Who Aurora Expeditions Is Best For

Aurora Expeditions is especially well-suited for travelers who:

  • Enjoy hiking, paddling, or active outdoor travel
  • Prefer exploration over luxury cruising
  • Want to learn while they explore
  • Value flexibility and spontaneity
  • Want to spend as much time ashore as possible

If your idea of Antarctica involves movement, discovery, and hands-on experience, Aurora’s expedition style aligns perfectly. For those who are less Active, Aurora is still a great option. Maybe you just want to see some new landing sites and be away from crowds. Aurora adapts to what you want. On Several days while some of us did long hikes, Aurora put together sight seeing zodiacs and easy beach landings. Meeting the needs of everyone on board! When you are only 130 people, it’s easier to adapt and that’s why I love Aurora!

Final Thoughts

Antarctica is one of the last truly wild places on Earth, and experiencing it fully requires more than simply passing through. For active travelers eager to maximize time off the ship, explore deeply, and engage physically with the environment, Aurora Expeditions delivers one of the most immersive Antarctic experiences available.

This is not a passive journey, it’s an expedition. And for those who dream of walking among penguins, hiking above icy bays, paddling through silent waters, and returning home transformed, Aurora Expeditions offers exactly the kind of adventure Antarctica deserves.
