Explora Journeys Offers Year Round Cruises to Europe

by Rocky Horan
Last updated May 28, 2026

For decades the cruise industry has treated Europe like a seasonal fling. Everyone rushes in around April, clogs the Mediterranean through summer, then vanishes to the Caribbean the minute temperatures dip below 70 degrees. By November, many European ports feel abandoned except for the occasional river cruise and a few hardy luxury lines repositioning ships.

Explora Journeys is doing something different. Europe is now year round!

The luxury lifestyle cruise brand from the MSC Group has decided Europe isn’t just a summer destination anymore. Explora will now keep ships sailing Europe year-round, including during the traditionally “dead” cruise season from December through March.

Honestly? It’s about time. But really, this is more an outcome of Trump’s attacks on Iran and the ships now avoiding the Red Sea and Arabian Peninsula.

Most cruise lines have trained travelers to think Europe only works in peak summer. Yet some of the best trips I’ve ever taken in Europe happened in the off-season. Fewer tourists. Better hotel rates. Locals who aren’t exhausted from overtourism. Cities that actually feel authentic instead of like outdoor amusement parks for cruise passengers. Lisbon in Feb – Awesome! Southern Spain in December, Yes please! Malta, Tunisia, Sicily and more. Options that Explora Journey is bringing to you this year and next!

Explora seems to understand that there is a gap in the industry and they are ready to fill it.

Instead of fleeing to the Caribbean with the rest of the industry, they’re leaning into winter Mediterranean itineraries, extended stays, and slower travel. That feels less like traditional cruising and more like the way savvy travelers increasingly want to experience Europe anyway.

And frankly, the timing is smart. Europe is popular, it’s crowded, prices are high, and from March – October it can be overwhelming! Summer Europe has become crowded to the point of absurdity. Venice restrictions. Santorini crowd controls. Barcelona water gun protests. Rome is honestly looking like the world’s busiest theme park by noon. Travelers are finally realizing that “shoulder season” often delivers a better experience than July or August. Not to mention July and August is TOO hot to handle in most of central Europe now!

Winter solves a lot of those problems.

I’d much rather wander Athens in February than melt there in August surrounded by twelve other cruise ships. The same goes for Lisbon, Valletta, Dubrovnik, or even parts of the French Riviera. Europe doesn’t suddenly become unattractive because you might need a jacket. Although I’m also from Seattle so a little rain never stopped me!

Cruise lines have historically avoided winter Europe because the economics were easier elsewhere. Caribbean sailings print money during winter. Weather is predictable. Americans want sunshine. Ships can operate simple seven to 14 night loops from Florida indefinitely.

Europe requires more creativity. Ports may have reduced operations. Weather can be less predictable. Passenger demand isn’t as automatic. But luxury travelers are different. They aren’t necessarily chasing pool weather anymore. They’re chasing experiences and trying to avoid crowds!

The entire Explora brand feels designed around destination immersion rather than waterslide-deck-chair-cruise-director energy. Explora ships don’t feel like floating amusement parks. They feel more like high-end boutique hotels that happen to move between ports. And this is why I love Explora Journey Cruises.

Think about it. A cozy luxury ship sailing the Mediterranean in December sounds infinitely more appealing to me than fighting crowds at a mega-resort in Nassau. Long dinners onboard. Empty museums ashore. Holiday markets. Cooler weather for walking cities. Ports that aren’t overwhelmed by six ships arriving simultaneously. And real chances to utilize the hot tub! Plu the center pool can be covered when it rains.

There’s also something psychologically appealing about Europe in winter that cruise lines have largely ignored. The continent slows down. Life becomes more local. Cafes feel intimate instead of transactional. You can actually get restaurant reservations. Places regain character once the seasonal tourist crush disappears.

It reminds me a bit of the shift we’ve seen in expedition cruising. Travelers increasingly care less about checking boxes and more about how a destination feels. Luxury travel has become less performative. Heck, Antarctica use to be a no go zone in March. Now it’s one of the most popular times!

Explora seems to recognize the change in travel and it’s for the good!

Of course, this strategy won’t appeal to everyone. If your definition of cruise season requires guaranteed sunbathing weather every day, the Caribbean still exists. But there’s a growing segment of travelers who would happily trade perfect weather for fewer crowds and a more authentic experience.

Luxury lines especially need differentiation beyond just “bigger suite” and “better food.” Sailing Europe year-round creates a genuinely different product. It gives repeat travelers a reason to come back and see destinations in another season.

And if we’re being honest, Europe in winter has always been underrated. The cruise industry just took a strangely long time to notice.
