How to “Book the Cook” for Singapore Airlines In-Flight Dining

Singapore Airlines is highly regarded for in flight service. I’ve flown Singapore Airlines before, way back in 2014, so I’m excited to have another opportunity. My trip is from Brisbane to Hong Kong in business class. This is an add-on to a business trip in Australia. I had some vacation time to burn before the end of the year, and opted to spend some time (read: eat) in Singapore and Hong Kong before heading home. This business class ticket was booked using 58,000 Citi points plus about US$76.

After booking, I looked at my reservation online, and was amazed by the options to pre book the meals. I knew Book the Cook was an option, but I didn’t remember how extensive these options can be. Even from an out station (Brisbane), there are many options. Most impressive is the menu departing Singapore. Even for a short regional flight to Hong Kong, there is a huge menu of options.  Now the hard part is to deciding what to choose…

What is Book the Cook?

Singapore Airlines has their extensive menu selections available online. It is possible to look at both the planned inflight menus and Book the Cook options online before flights. This service is available for flights in Suites/First Class, Business Class, and Premium Economy on certain routes. Using the Book the Cook service at least 24 hours before departure will allow the selected item to be served as the main course of the inflight menu. On some longer flights, even a second meal can be selected. Flights departing Singapore have the most extensive options, but even from out stations, the options are extensive. For example, flights from Sydney have 13 options in First, and 9 each in Business and Premium Economy. Singapore departures have menus broken down into various culinary styles, and for business class, have nearly 50 different options.

Menu selections can be made by accessing the booking on either the Singapore Airlines website or mobile app.

Inflight menus in Singapore Business Class

The planned menus for inflight meals are available online. Don’t use this if you want to be surprised, but I appreciate the opportunity to view these in advance. Here are the menus for my flights: Business class from Brisbane

Book the Cook menu to Singapore

Here is the menu I’m offered for my flight from Brisbane to Singapore.  A total of 12 options for the main meal.

As a fan of Indian food most any time, and particularly in the dry air of airplane cabins, I’m leaning towards the Madras Chicken. I find savory food to hold up well in when in flight. I’ll have most of a day after landing for some more Singapore food.  Looking forward to it.

Book the Cook menu departing Singapore

Admittedly, the main objective of my time in Singapore is some combination of eating in hawker centres, sweating, walking around a bit, and repeating. Still, I’m excited for the obscene variety of meal options on my relatively short (under 4 hours) flight to Hong Kong. Here are the options for Business Class departures from Singapore:

I’ve heard good things about the Japanese meals, and the Lobster Thermidor is famous. With my day in Singapore, I’m not sure if I’ll need anymore Singapore cuisine, since the stuff on the ground is almost certainly better. Laksa is on the menu, but apparently my flight isn’t long enough to have that option. From what I can tell, satay is no longer served with meals, and while it is tasty, I don’t think I’ll waste my BTC on that.

Final Thoughts on Singapore Airlines Book the Cook

This will be my first trip on Singapore Airlines long haul business class. It will also be my first flight in a premium cabin on an A350, so it should be a fun trip.
While I love a good steak, I don’t eat beef a lot, so I try to make the most of when I do. I don’t think a plane is the best place for that. I’m not that much into shellfish, although the idea of Lobster Thermidor is tempting. Some of the spicier options are likely what I’m thinking. Any suggestions for which meal options I should choose?
