Alaska Airlines Leap Day Weekend BOGO Sale, Today Only

by Steve Case
Last updated February 11, 2020

Alaska Airlines is having a sale today only for a Buy One, Get One price.  This can be a great deal if you and a companion would like to get a cheap mileage run.

How The Sale Works

The sale is essential to buy one get one free for travel outbound on February 29, 2020 and return on March 3, 2020.  This amounts to taking a long weekend with your traveling companion.  If you can get away and buy your tickets today, this could be an excellent mileage run opportunity.  The Alaska Airlines mileage program is the last remaining distance-based miles earning plan left so you will get actual flight miles credited to your account.  Doing some initial searching from my home airport (PDX), the sale generally was for flights with connections and not nonstop flights.  This is OK with me as it is a chance to earn even more miles by flying through Seattle.  Alaska Airlines awards a minimum mileage credit of 500 miles so that is a plus.  Use the promo code LEAPDAY in the discount fare code box.

Sample Roundtrip From PDX To DFW

Here is a sample booking that I looked at from PDX to DFW.  Note that the special “red” symbol indicates flights that have sale seats available.  I will show the sales fares first and then the regular fares for comparison.  This sample routing PDX-SEA-DFW and return will earn you 4,320 elite qualifying miles.  Elite Alaska mileage plan members can earn up to 5,400 additional bonus miles.

You will notice that the sales price is a little more than half off the regular fare.  This is due to the cost of taxes which are the same for both the regular and sales fares.  Half price offers don’t work with government-imposed fees.

My Take On This Sale

Any sale at Alaska Airlines is generally good since the sales fares still earn actual flight miles.  If you can get away and you and your companion are looking for a cheap mileage run, this sale may be for you.  The miles you earn using these sales fare do count towards elite status.
