Get in the Holiday Spirit with Alaska’s Ugly Sweater and More

by Scott Mackenzie
Last updated December 10, 2019

Alaska Airlines is bringing back its ugly sweater contest this year. Wear your own favorite for National Ugly Sweater Day on December 20 and enjoy complimentary priority boarding. There will also be holiday treats in the Alaska Lounge and a holiday-themed “Snowplane” making stops across the network.

Sweaters are one of life’s greatest pleasures, and if you want to show how much you love Alaska Airlines you can even buy your own! It’s not normally cold enough here in Texas, but I still look forward to each cold front; as I write this it’s a pleasant 42 degrees. Here’s last year’s post with a picture of me in the 2018 sweater.

Holiday travel requires its own rules. Even if you’re an experienced frequent traveler like me you should still arrive early at the airport — at least two hours. You may be used to breezing through security, but there are more crowds than normal and more inexperienced travelers who might be slowing things down. Poor weather can also slow things down on surrounding highways. I can tell you a thing or two about being stranded on a bus in the snow on my way to Sea-Tac.

What to do if things move smoothly and you have free time on your hands? Head to the lounge! Remember that Alaska Airlines Visa cardholders can buy a day pass for just $25 (a 50% discount), and it’s good for multiple visits if you have to make a connection.

P.S. – While you’re checking out Russell Wilson on the cover of this month’s Alaska Beyond, don’t forget to flip through and find my latest article on how to make the most of Mileage Plan. Over the last six months I’ve covered elite status, retail partners, and booking award travel. This month there’s more to read about Alaska’s global partners like El Al and Singapore Airlines!
