Confirmed: Amex Platinum Adds $20 Phone and $20 Streaming Credit

by Rocky Horan
Last updated May 8, 2020

The American Express Platinum card has a fairly high membership fee at $550 per year. It can usually be offset through some benefits, but the sole purpose is to be a premium card for travelers. Due to the current state of the world, travel is down, Centurion lounges are closed, and American Express is looking for ways to remain relevant and retain card holders. Today when I called to cancel my card I was told about a new offer. Starting May 1st, all American Express Platinum card holders are eligible for a $20 a month streaming credit and a $20 a month wireless provider credit.

Details of the new offer on all American Express cards are now available. The $20 a month is automatic. Unlike targeted Amex offer, this credit will automatically apply to your account when your wireless provider or streaming service is billed to your American Express Platinum card.

The Offer

  • Platinum Consumer Card Members will receive up to $320 in statement credits when they use their Platinum Card on select streaming and wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers (up to $20 per month on each, from May through December 2020).
  • Business Platinum Card Members will receive up to $320 in statement credits on wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers and U.S. purchases for shipping (up to $20 per month on each, from May through December 2020).
  • Green Consumer Card Members will receive up to $80 in statement credits when they use their Green Card to pay for wireless telephone services purchased directly from U.S. service providers (up to $10 per month, from May through December 2020).

$20 Streaming Credit

The $20 monthly streaming credit is good for a plethora of providers. The agent was reading the terms to me and included many big names. These include Netflix, Disney+, CBS All access, Amazon Prime Music or Video, Iheartradio, Fubu, Hulu, HBO Go, Sling and more. The streaming credit is good for video streaming and music. Even Kindle Unlimited is included. Read, watch, or listen digitally and your subscription is now free or $20 off per month. This current benefit is only good through December 2020. A $160 value. $20 Phone Credit

Similar to the streaming credit, the new wireless phone credit is $20 a month through December. This is also a $160 value. Charge your monthly phone bill to your American Express Platinum card for a $20 credit. All major phone providers are included in the deal. The representative read to me Verizon, T-mobile, Spring and AT&T.

Amex Adds $320 Value

The addition of these two benefits are enough for me to keep the card through 2020. The American Express Platinum $550 fee is now easy to offset through credits and benefits. Each year the card has a $200 airline credit value, $100 Saks Credit, $200 in Uber credit, and now $320 in wireless and streaming credit. The down side, many of these credits are monthly. If utilized correctly, one could easily earn $820 in annual credits.
