Cathay Pacific in partnership with Hong Kong Brewing company is bringing their own exclusive beer to the sky for a limited of time. Knowing that taste buds dull and sweetness and salt receptors are lacking in flight, many airlines adjust food seasoning for flight. Now, Cathay Pacific is doing the same to beer! Meet Betsy, The world’s first beer created to consume at 35,000 feet!
Betsy the beer is named after Cathay Pacific first DC-3. The DC-3 brought the world to Asia in its glory day and was once the backbone of Cathay Pacific’s fleet. Now retired, Cathay Pacific pays tribute to their first DC-3 in a carbonated fashion!
Cathay Pacific has a long tradition of serving excellent food inflight and prides themselves in using local ingredients. Cathay is one of the only airlines I know of that has a farm dedicated to their first and business class food services. Now that tradition is in their beer!
It isn’t a secret that cabin pressure and altitude affects passengers’ taste buds, but by using a combination of science and traditional brewing methods, Betsy Beer, which Cathay Pacific has produced in harness with Hong Kong Beer Co, is created with a combination of Hong Kong and UK-sourced ingredients, aroma and necessary carbonation to taste great both in the air and on the ground.
The airline’s customer-centric ethos puts the needs of passengers at the heart of every decision it makes as it strives to provide an exceptional experience at every stage of the journey. Betsy Beer’s carefully constructed recipe has been developed accordingly, in order for passengers to enjoy an outstanding one-of-a-kind craft beer at altitude.
The inclusion of “Dragon Eye” fruit is a unique characteristic of the beverage. Known for its aromatic properties, the fruit adds to the round, rich, textural properties that make the beer distinctive. This flavour is enhanced further by the inclusion of a small component of New Territories’-sourced honey in the brewing process, giving the beer agreeable floral notes, while the use of Fuggle, a revered hop and a mainstay of traditional British craft ales, lends it a pleasingly earthy and full-bodied flavour.
Where to taste Betsy Beer
Betsy Beer will be available on flights between Hong Kong and the UK only. This beer is for the rich and famous, or travel hackers as it’s only in First and Business class. Sorry economy, have a Heineken instead. Sadly, Cathay has not brewed enough of beer to serve this rare beer throughout their entire network. One can only hope that the popularity of Betsy will be world renown and flyers will demand Betsy network wide!
Thus far, Cathay Pacific has said the beer will only be available for a limited of time. Flyers can enjoy Betsy beer between March 1 and April 30, 2017. This seems to be a short promotion for a beer. Each beer takes time to craft and create perfection, yet Cathay is killing this one early!
Not flying – Taste Betsy Here
Do not worry if you are not flying Cathay Pacific, there are actually other ways to taste Betsy Beer. Although I am willing to believe it will not taste as good at sea level!
