Thanks to a lot of travel of late, I’ve been able to rack up some nights towards SPG’s excellent current “Getaway Free” promotion; (which Kevin covered here) where 3 stays earn 1 night at any category 1-6 resort property with standard rooms available. One exception to this is the Category 7 St. Regis Punta Mita in Nayarit, Mexico. There are a lot of great properties that are available for redemption with this promo, including Le Meridien in Phuket, which I blogged about a few weeks ago.
Since my wife and I were in Thailand last winter, and have a trip to Australia and New Zealand coming up later this year, I had a bit of difficulty figuring out how to take advantage of this promo. We couldn’t take a lot of additional time off, and unfortunately the properties in Australia aren’t convenient to our plans, so I searched around a bit more. We love Hawaii, but flights are rather pricey (despite a recent fare sale), and it’s a bit far for a long-weekend type trip, at least that’s what my wife tells me.
I started to look into properties in Mexico or the Caribbean. Always looking to ‘maximize’ the value, I figured this category 7 (normally 30,000 SPG points per night) would be great use of this promotion. Figuring this might be a popular choice, now that I have 2 nights available, I booked 2 nights at the St. Regis, and plan to add on a night or 2 more as I earn them. Flights on Continental via Houston are quite affordable right now as well.
Update: I had a great stay. Please see my review of the St. Regis Punta Mita.
