Today is the first day this year that Daily Getaways is offering the chance to buy points on sale, and it’s an example of pure arbitrage. Rather than pay for a hotel directly, you can buy points and redeem them for that same hotel. Inexpensive points could be a cheaper option than paying directly with cash.
All offers go on sale at 10 AM Pacific, 1 PM Eastern and will likely sell out quickly. I recommend you have the site pulled up and your credit card ready to click through and make your purchase as soon as possible.
Buy IHG Points on Sale
There are five different packages available today to purchase IHG Rewards points, and each has a slightly different price per point. Because competition could be intense, you might be wise to go after a less attractive package than the one you really want. On the other hand, remember that you are able to purchase one of each deal, which means you could potentially load up on all five to really increase your IHG Rewards balance!
- 15,000 points for $89 = 0.593 cents per point (1,000 available)
- 25,000 points for $149 = 0.596 cents per point (750 available)
- 50,000 points for $299 = 0.598 cents per point (755 available)
- 100,000 points for $589 = 0.589 cents per point (2,900 available)
- 130,000 points for $749 = 0.576 cents per point (1,000 available)
This sale is not as good as it seems at first glance. You can always buy IHG points at a discount by using some existing points in your account to reserve a cash and points reservation. When doing this, the cash is actually used to buy the missing points at a discount. Then cancel the reservation, and the points — all of them — will be returned to your account. You can’t get a refund for the cash portion directly, but indirectly it means purchasing points at prices as low as 0.625 cents each. (Prices vary depending on the mix of cash and points.)
There have also been other official sales, as recently as February, with prices as low as 0.575 cents per point. So this is certainly not the lowest price that IHG has ever offered to buy points.
In light of this, I wouldn’t rush too fast to purchase points from Daily Getaways unless you really need them. But I won’t ignore that this is a better price than the usual cash and points trick. Also, that trick is a pain in the ass. If you know you need a lot of points quickly for an upcoming stay, then this may be one of the better Daily Getaways offers this year.
