The fight for Seattle is heating up and Delta is not holding back when it comes to advertising and luring customers away from Alaska and onto their metal on their three new routes from Seattle. Now until October 31, 2014 (For over 1 year!), Delta Skymiles member can earn DOUBLE redeemable miles on all Delta flights from Seattle to Las Vegas, San Fran, and Los Angeles! The only catch is, travel must be booked by December 31, 2013 to qualify and Skymiles member MUST register for the promotion.
I have written a lot about the fight for Seattle and Delta’s west coast expansion many times. It first started with Delta re-launching Seattle-Los Angeles flights and then again when Delta increased frequencies to LAX and announced new destinations from Seattle such as San Fran & Vegas. Delta is taking on their partner on some high profile routes, and even Mike Medeiros, VP of Delta in Seattle said, Delta and Alaska are “fierce competitors.” Yet, Delta has gone even further. They are now investing in Seattle. This week they announced a partnership in a Seattle suburb to rebuild a playground and earlier this year, Delta became the official sponsor of both pro teams at Century link field, the FC Sounders and NFL Seahawks.
So despite this investment in Seattle, this double mile promotion is a great for Delta Frequent Flyers but could be bad news for Alaska. Delta is clearly trying to lure the feeder traffic away from Alaska and put them on their own plans. I don’t blame Delta, but Alaska better be prepared to fight back so they do not lose their market share. Look out for mile promotions from Alaska Airlines (Such as the 10,000 bonus mile promotion) and sale wars on these popular routes.
