If you’ve ever arrived in Cairo after a long international flight, you know the drill. Before you can even think about heading to passport control, you’re usually stuck in another line buying Egypt’s famous visa sticker with cash and then taking the proof of payment to the immigration officer to enter the country. An easy process, but one that does confuse some travelers.
That process is finally starting to change. Beginning August 1, 2026, Egypt will launch a pilot program at Cairo International Airport that allows travelers to obtain a visa-on-arrival digitally before they travel. Instead of standing in line for a paper sticker, visitors can apply online, pay electronically, and arrive with a QR code ready to present upon entry. Streamlining the processing and bringing Egypt into the modern world.
For U.S. travelers, who are required to obtain a visa to enter Egypt, the new system should eliminate one of the more frustrating parts of arriving in the country. The digital visa will cost $36, consisting of the traditional $30 visa fee plus a $6 processing charge. Applications can be completed online or through a mobile app up to 48 hours before departure.
During the pilot phase, travelers will still be able to purchase the traditional visa sticker from bank teller windows inside the airport. Self-service kiosks will also be available in the arrivals hall for those who choose not to complete the process before departure.
A Welcome Upgrade for Visitors
While Egypt’s visa-on-arrival process has generally worked well, it has always felt somewhat dated. Arriving passengers often face multiple queues before reaching immigration, particularly when several international flights land around the same time. Unknowing travelers often bypass the queues and go straight to the immigration authorities to be turned around. Even I have missed the Visa line my first time to Egypt.
Moving to a digital system is a logical step and brings Egypt more in line with destinations that have adopted eVisas, electronic travel authorizations, or fully digital arrival processes.
The Egyptian government has made it clear that the long-term goal is to eliminate the physical visa sticker entirely, replacing it with a digital QR-code-based system. Cairo is the first airport to receive the technology, with plans to expand it to other Egyptian airports in stages.
What It Means for Travelers
For those planning a Nile cruise, a visit to the pyramids, or a broader exploration of Egypt’s archaeological treasures, the change won’t save a huge amount of money, but it should save time and reduce airport stress. That’s especially valuable in Cairo, where arrivals can already feel chaotic for first-time visitors.
As more countries digitize border formalities, travelers increasingly expect visa applications, payments, and approvals to happen before they even board their flight. Egypt’s new pilot program is a small but meaningful step toward a smoother arrival experience.
And honestly, anything that gets me out of an extra airport line and on my way to seeing the pyramids faster is a win in my book.
