Finally – My Stolen IHG Points Restored

by Brad
Last updated January 14, 2019

I’m pleased to report that I finally have all of the stolen IHG points back in my account. It took many phone calls and emails, but I was able to get the full tally of IHG points restored. It took nearly two months, and lots of inept replies from IHG via email and on the phone, but I’m finally content that this matter is resolved.

Why did it take so long to get my IHG Points restored?

I’m really not sure how to explain it why this process lasted so long. Of course, most front line customer service reps aren’t empowered to do very much, and given my non-status with IHG, I’m sure I didn’t get top of the line staff in my various contacts. It took multiple calls and multiple emails, but I finally got it sorted. At one point, I was told to wait up to several weeks, and I did. Not sure what was done, if anything. One message I got mentioned transferring my points to a new account, and that is ultimately what happened. It took multiple follow-up calls and emails, but at least it is finished.

It is unclear why nearly 2 months passed for various account reviews to occur. Presumably, they were just hoping I would go away. Initially, I was told that I am responsible for account security, but thankfully, this research IHG did finally proved I did not book those rooms, and ultimately I was able to get my IHG points restored

My IHG Points Restored, yours can be too, with persistence.

IHG really needs to improve their security so this could have all been avoided. I’m not an IT expert by any means, but account passwords with only a 4 digit pin are NOT secure! My suggestion is to keep an eye on your IHG accounts, to make sure they are secure. If you notice anything unusual, get in touch with IHG, and hopefully you can get things resolved faster than I did. Hopefully they will improve their account security, and issues like this can be avoided. When I first posted about this occurring, several people mentioned they experienced fraudulent activity on their account, so clearly this is not rare.

Bottom line, I’m glad that my point balance is back to where it was before this all began. I don’t use IHG points very often, but I certainly don’t want someone else to use the points I earned. They have lots of properties, and more options are always a good thing.
