Renting a car when you are under 25 absolutely sucks! Since adults and teenagers 16-24 are more likely to be involved in an accident, car rental agencies make a killing in young driver surcharges. The young driver surcharge costs anywhere between $10 to $25+ a day in under 25 driver fees! I recall when I was under 25, my favorite domestic destination to visit was Hawaii, as Enterprise didn’t have a young driver surcharge. Now that has even changed and the islands’ Enterprises now charge upwards to $20 a day in fees! The good news though is there is ways to avoid the under 25 driver fees!
The easiest way to avoid the young driver surcharge is renting through a company that doesn’t have them!

Although this isn’t surcharge free, it’s much cheaper than most competitors!
Sixt is rapidly expanding in the United States and currently offers rentals in the following states:
Rent Locally – Small Privately held Companies
Many cities offer local car rental companies at off airport locations for cutthroat prices. A friend of mine did an internship in San Diego for a month and rented a car for just a few hundred dollars through Dirt Cheap Rentals. Don’t expect a new car, his was a late 90s Toyota corolla with nearly 300,000 miles on it, but it ran and it was cheap and was under 25 surcharge fee!
Super Cheap Car Rental – Located in Los Angeles (LAX), Orange County (SNA), and San Francisco (SFO), Super Cheap Car Rentals has no underage driver fees for drivers 21-24!
Corporate Codes Reduce Underage Driver Surcharge
When I was under 25 my company had a corporate code which I used whenever renting vehicles for work related travel. As part of the corporate agreement, there were no surcharges/underage fees on rentals and even included free loss/damage waiver. Although I was only supposed to use the corporate code for work related travel, I used it whenever I rented a car as the car rental companies never asked. You can find corporate codes online or ask your friends for theirs if they work for big companies!
Renting a car doesn’t have to be expensive if you are under 25. Find a loop hole or use a company that doesn’t charge surcharges and enjoy saving money! After all more money in your pocket is more money you can have fun with later! Happy Travels!
