It has been widely speculated that United Airlines and Continental Airlines are in merger talks. Many of us on the Upgrd Podcast have speculated for years that the merger is inevitable, although some recent news would leave you to believe that the airline merger could be placed on hold.
Although no official announcement has even been made about merger talks, the Houston Chronicle is reporting that Houston officials are interested in offering incentives to keep the newly merged carrier in Texas. Houston Mayor Annise Parker stated:
As soon as news of merger talks hit the media, Parker said, she left messages for Smisek to let him know the city was willing to work with a merged company in order to keep its headquarters in town.
Elsewhere it’s being reported that Continental Airlines Board of Director’s is meeting today to discuss the merger.
Continental Airlines’ board of directors is meeting Wednesday to review a potential merger with United Airlines, and the carriers are expected to decide within a matter of days whether to combine operations, say people close to the situation.
Where will they decide to call home if they merge? Most likely Chicago, but things are at such an early stage it’s hard to tell. All I know is I hope they make a decision by the time we record the next podcast on Thursday. Can someone please give Jeff or Glenn and ring and ask them to hurry up? 😉
