JetBlue just made a move that should get the attention of anyone who flies between South Florida and Southern California. Exciting those living in San Diego and Los Angeles.
The airline announced a significant expansion of its premium Mint service from Fort Lauderdale, adding a new daily Mint flight to San Diego and increasing Mint availability on flights to Los Angeles and San Francisco this winter. According to JetBlue, this will be the largest Mint schedule ever operated from Fort Lauderdale. As people look for sunshine and beaches, Jetblue is ready to bring west coast travelers to the warmer waters of South Florida.
For travelers who want comfort on a 5-6 hour flight which includes a lay flat seat, JetBlue’s news is a welcoming announcement. I just wish I had this option when I lived in San Diego!
Fort Lauderdale Continues to Grow
While Miami often gets the spotlight, Fort Lauderdale has quietly become one of JetBlue’s most important gateways. The carrier says it has increased departures from Fort Lauderdale by more than 75% this year and expects to operate approximately 150 daily flights by winter. With Spirit going broke, this makes sense. JetBlue is filling a vacuum and FLL has less competition than New York-JFK or Boston.
More importantly, JetBlue appears to be doubling down on premium travel rather than competing solely on price.
Mint Remains One of the Best Ways to Cross the Country
I’ve said it before and will continue to stand by it. Jetblue Mint remains one of the best domestic premium products in North America. I fly it when I can, they really have a better offering than Delta, Alaska, United, or America.
Unlike the tired recliner seats still sold as “First Class” on American Or even business on the others Jetblue brings something fun to the market. Both for solo travelers and couples. Jetblue Mint offers Fully lie-flat seat, direct aisle access on most planes, fantastice levated dining options, boutique-hotel styling and excellent bedding and amenities. Add flight attendants that still like their job and that’s even more exciting!
For travelers spending five or six hours crossing the country, that matters. From service to product Jetblue is among the top. They offer a a true lie-flat seat transforms a transcontinental flight from something you endure into something you actually enjoy.
The San Diego Route Is Particularly Interesting
The headline announcement is a new daily Fort Lauderdale–San Diego Mint flight beginning November 19, 2026. JetBlue says it will be the only airline offering a business-class product between the two cities. That’s a notable competitive advantage as otherwise you can enjoy this 5+ hour flight sitting up.
As a previous resident, I attest that San Diego often gets overlooked compared to Los Angeles and San Francisco, yet it’s one of the most desirable destinations in California for both business and leisure travelers. The conference market alone in San Diego is HUGE! Direct premium service should appeal to many. Not just vacation seekers.
The eastbound schedule is also attractive, with a morning departure from Fort Lauderdale and an afternoon return from San Diego. I love that this isn’t a red eye flight, like many Mint flights not even allowing you to enjoy the fight, and instead just sleeping the entire time.

More Mint Flights to Los Angeles and San Francisco
The expansion isn’t limited to San Diego. California in general will see more service. JetBlue says customers will have access to up to:
- Eight daily flights between Fort Lauderdale and Los Angeles
- Three daily flights between Fort Lauderdale and San Francisco
This is a huge expansion, and a focus on long haul domestic flying. Overall a substantial amount of premium capacity for a market that historically hasn’t enjoyed the same level of attention as New York–California routes.For passengers based in South Florida, it means more opportunities to select a Mint flight without having to route through New York or Boston.
Final Thoughts
JetBlue’s Mint expansion from Fort Lauderdale is exactly the kind of network growth I’d like to see more airlines pursue.
Instead of adding yet another basic economy route, JetBlue is investing in a product travelers genuinely value. The new San Diego service fills a gap in the market, while additional Mint frequencies to Los Angeles and San Francisco make premium coast-to-coast travel more accessible.
For South Florida travelers, that’s a win.
And for those of us who believe domestic premium travel should offer more than a wider seat and a snack basket, it’s another reminder that Mint remains one of the best ways to fly across the United States.
