Review: LAN 787 Business Class MAD-FRA

by Rocky Horan
Last updated November 10, 2018

The 787 is by far one of the newest and most elegant birds that are currently flying the skies. The plane with its sleek look, sloped wings, and distinguish looks is a plane I honestly look forward to flying every time. I will not lie, being only my second time to fly the 787, after I booked my ticket using my American Express membership reward points via a British Airways Transfer I was like a little kid on Christmas.  It only cost me 15000 avios + $23. It was easy to book via the BA webpage. Like I said all I could talk about or think about was what it would be like to A) fly LAN and B) fly the 787 again!

LAN 787

After a nice and relaxing visit to the T4s Iberia lounge, I was off to board my plane. By the time I had arrived, most passengers had already boarded, so instead of using the priority lane, I opted to wait in line behind the other 4 passengers and board with the rest. A short walk down the jet bridge and I was on board the beautiful 787. Boarding was down through door 2L, meaning passengers walked through the rear business class cabin to reach the economy section of the aircraft. As I was seated in 2L, I crossed through to the opposite side of the plane and headed towards the front of the plane.  I found my seat, stored my luggage, and sat in glee as I was on one of the newest aircrafts in the world in business class and I was more than excited for my short 2.5 hour flight to Frankfurt!

Once I found my seat, I was greeted by an FA who spoke perfect English and offered me a preflight drink. She offered me either a glass of champagne, water, juice, or a pisco sour as a preflight drink. I almost automatically asked for a glass of champagne, but then remembering that LAN was also the airline of Peru, I requested a pisco sour instead. The FA disappeared into the galley for a few minutes and reappeared with a drink in one hand and warm nuts in the other. Honestly it was the best welcome I’ve ever had in business class and I was already impressed with LAN, especially as this flight is a short intra-Europe flight that only operates between Madrid and Frankfurt! Most airlines in business offer nothing more than an economy class seat with an upgraded meal; LAN offers the entire business class experience!

cheese & red wine – Yumm!

Once we took off for Frankfurt, the FAs were quick to come through the cabin and offer a hot towel followed by beverage service and a meal. There were three or four FAs working the forward cabin, but only 4 of the 30 seats occupied. The service was superb and the FAs spoke perfect English and Spanish and I even heard a few speaking German with the customers; I was quite impressed! After meal service, another hot towel was provided and drinks were free flowing throughout the flight. Since the flight was short, I got up and took pictures of the rear business class cabin (which was completely empty and played with the seat a bit more.

The highlight to the 787 is how new it is! The seats on the 787 were a great business class seat, despite being in a 2x2x2 configuration. For passengers traveling alone, I’d highly recommend a middle cabin seat, unless you want to climb over someone or have someone climb over you. Either way, the lay flat seat is 73 inches long, and being 5’10”, I fit perfectly in the seat. I loved that my feet didn’t tuck underneath any other seat in the bulkhead and the 23 inch wide seat feels extremely spacious! Pure comfort eluded from every part of the seat.

The person area around the seat is also great! Each seat is equipped with a foot rest which provides space for personal items underneath. In addition to the foot rest, between each seat are shelves with a roll down cover. My shoes fit perfectly in the cubby and so did my two-in-one tablet.  Within the seat itself, under the arm rest is a cup holder, perfect for a bottle of water, a mini luggage nut which held my passport, cell phone, etc., perfectly, and the all-important universal power port and USB charge station. The table was on the side of the seat and lifted up and out without the need to lift the armrest; true brilliance! The armrest between each seat folded open providing even more space for beverage or other items. Then my favorite part was when the seat is in the lay flat mode; there is a do not disturb button, so the FAs know to leave you alone while you rest!

The LAN 787 is a true beauty! Nothing was overlooked when this plane was designed! From the touch button dimming windows, to the sky interior and large overhead bins or even the large 15.4 HD TVs with hundreds of hours of the newest movies, TV shows, music, and more. LAN cut no corners! If you are flying from Madrid to Frankfurt, look for LAN as they offer the best business class cabin product for an intra-Europe flight and the cabin crew is amazing!

In fact, the cabin crew is so amazing and was so excited about the wine that they offered that I spent the majority of the flight tasting all the wines they presented from around Chile and Argentina! The wines were delicious and average cost per bottle was around 25-45 USD! I was shocked by the price and very impressed that LAN invested in their wine as seriously as they did! I really loved this flight, enjoyed the good food and wine, the amazing service, and more importantly this plane! I hope to fly LAN long distance so I can truly experience what LAN offers instead of just a short hop across Europe!
