Big news for Alaska Airlines frequent flyers, aka Mileage Plan members. I mean Atmos Award members. Alaska Airlines and partnership with LATAM is coming to an end today and with it, your ability to redeem Atmos Rewards points for flights across South America and worldwide. If you are looking to fly to or from South America, today is the last chance you can use those miles for Latin America’s largest airline.
If you’ve been eyeing a trip to Machu Picchu, Patagonia, or Rio, you’ll want to act fast. I have cashed in several tickets, but am hoping nothing goes south. Because these tickets are not changeable, only refundable going forward.
Last day to Book Sept 30, 2025
The last day to book LATAM award flights using Alaska Airlines Atmos Rewards points is September 30, 2025. After that, LATAM award redemptions will be completely discontinued, as the partnership officially ends on October 1, 2025. You can still find LOTS of flights on LATAM in economy and business for Alaska members to redeem. Yet, after 11:59 pacific time, these awards are to be gone.
What You Need to Know
Here’s a breakdown of how this change affects your ability to earn and redeem:
Award Redemptions
-
Book By September 30, 2025: You can still redeem Atmos Rewards points for LATAM flights, but only until this date.
-
Travel After September? No Problem – If Booked in Time: You can still fly on LATAM after September 30, 2025, using Alaska miles — but you must book the award before the deadline.
- Change Award flights – Not possible unless the change is made due to a schedule change. These are often hard to work through.
Points Earning – Already gone
-
Tickets booked on or before August 31, 2025 will earn Atmos Rewards points regardless of when travel occurs.
-
Tickets booked between September 1 and September 30, 2025 will earn points only for travel completed by December 31, 2025.
-
Travel on or after January 1, 2026 will no longer earn Atmos Rewards points on LATAM flights.
This is not just a pause or a temporary suspension — it’s a full termination of the relationship. As Alaska grows through merging with Hawaiian airlines. LATAM and Alaska Airlines are no longer partners. Delta first cut off American Airlines with it’s 20% stake in LATAM. And with that comes a board seat. So we know Delta is itching to further cut at Alaska Airlines as they battle over Seattle.
Why This Matters — Especially for South America Travel
This is a significant blow for travelers who frequently visit or have plans to explore South America. People like me who has family in South America. I fly LATAM 2-3x a year. Traveling within South America. Alaska has NO partner. Traveling to South America, the ONLY option is now American Airlines from North America.
LATAM is not just any partner — it’s the largest airline group in South America, with extensive coverage in countries like Brazil, Chile, Peru, and Colombia. Alaska Airlines has hubs in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Seattle and elsewhere. The South American population is large and growing on the West Coast. Without a partner in South America, Alaska is likely going to lose market share to travelers to South America.
More importantly, LATAM was Alaska Airlines’ only airline partner based anywhere in the Americas outside the U.S. and Canada. With this partnership ending, Alaska Atmos members lose an efficient and often cost-effective way to redeem points for travel throughout South America.
Final Thoughts
If you’ve been sitting on Atmos Rewards points with dreams of exploring Latin America, now is the time to plan your trip. Award space can be limited, especially as more travelers try to book before the deadline. Tickets must be booked by tonight as Alaska Airlines partnership is going dark tomorrow
