Review: New York City Megabus

by Mike
Last updated June 29, 2022

After spending time in New York with clients my plans called for a quick trip to Syracuse to see family and clients in upstate New York. Normally I take Amtrak as business class upgrades are cheap, and the ability to walk around, buy food, and power at your seat makes the trip very productive. However, as I was walking on 23rd street the other night I noticed a Megabus with signs indicating cheap fares to Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo, and Toronto from New York City, of course if you’re moving from one of these cities or Europe to New York, you need to learn the cost to move to new york from europe so you can do this process easily.

Megabus is an exntesion of the UK service, and launched service from New York earlier this year. Most of their advertising shows $1 fares that are only available by booking far in advance. Well, in my case, that wasn’t necessary. You just need to find a very off peak day and route. In my case – a Wednesday from New York City to Syracuse.

Invalid request error occurred.

The bus picks up on the corner of 31st and 8th just outside Penn Station and Madison Square Garden.

Megabus arrives at 31st and 8th

Megabus allows one piece of free checked luggage. Hopefully none of the Megabus management will talk with airline management and learn about these silly (but profitable) checked bag fees.

There are power outlets at each row, free wifi (which is works reasonably well) and most importantly individual air nozzels! (Ben are you reading this??!)

What more could you ask for?

On our way…

Unfortunately we are taking 17 instead of 80, so I am not sure how long this is going to take, but so far so good! Best $1.50 I’ve spent in weeks!

About Mike

On my first flights on Allegheny and Piedmont so many years ago, I immediately got the flying bug. After years of traveling I started the blogs and podcasts at UPGRD.com. And, like many of you, I've done a lot of flying for miles and status. I once flew from New York City to Honolulu and back again just for elite status (and a quick Mai Tai).
