New Name, Same Great Stuff

by Scott Mackenzie
Last updated February 21, 2019

As I warned some readers in the last issue of the weekly newsletter, I recently made the decision to move this blog to a new domain. I’m taking up the “Travel Codex” name that I had previously dedicated to the community forums. You can find the blog here at travelcodex.com, and the forums at forum.travelcodex.com.

Update: the Travel Codex Forum is now closed. Thank you for participating in this experiment!

It’s a bittersweet transition. On one hand, I have some fond memories of Hack My Trip. I think it speaks to my rebellious attitude — this blog has always done things a little differently. On the other hand, the blog has grown tremendously and sometimes advertisers (and for all I know, Google’s web crawlers) frown on the use of certain words. If changing a name makes a few people happier, then I’m not going to make a big deal about it.

My belief is that the content speaks for itself. In less than three years this blog has gone from zero to 400,000 page views a month and remains largely supported by display advertising, not credit card affiliate links. “Travel Codex” is also a little closer to what I consider the original focus of this blog, to organize and improve on the explanation of information that makes your travel experience better. Travel hacking was only ever one aspect of that.

In future days you’ll see a few other minor changes to complete the rebranding. But the main changes are already complete. You can visit either domain and will be redirected to the right place. The banner at the top of the page is fixed. You can already email me at scott@travelcodex.com, although email to my old address will be redirected and continues to function.

One more perk for long-time followers: I’m planning to bring back a full-content RSS feed. So keep an eye out for that announcement.
