Southwest Airlines is hosting “Media Days” this Monday and Tuesday and has announced that Monday morning Southwest CEO Gary Kelly will make a special announcement. Members of the general public and employees have been invited to watch this announcement at 9am C.T. via Southwest Airline’s video stream. With the media notification of a special announcement by the CEO the rumor mills have already started and people are hypothesizing that Gary Kelly will announce anything as major as a larger international expansion, new planes including wide-body aircrafts for TATL flights, the end of bags fly free and the low cost perception, or the more than likely correct answer is a brand refresh with a new aircraft livery.
Since Southwest inception in 1971, they airlines has only boasted one livery refresh in 2001. The original livery was included a desert gold fuselage, with a dessert gold, red and orange pinstripe tail with small white buffer lines separating each section of color. Like today, the word Southwest appeared on the uppermost section of the tail but was painted in white instead of sunshine yellow. The livery most commonly seen today. The new livery launched January 16, 2001 included a makeover of the desert gold fuselage and replaced the sandy brown with a cannonball blue but retailed the red and orange pinstripes.
Now with Southwest being 43 years old and almost finished with their merger and integration of Airtran almost completed, Southwest might be interested in updating their livery. This blurry image appeared on the web today and could potentially be Gary Kelly’s big announcement on Monday.
IF this is the new livery, it appears the airline would keep the cannonball blue fuselage but boast a larger Southwest logo in white toward the front of the aircraft, retire the orange strip and replace it with a sunshine gold, which appears be a hybrid of the dessert gold and orange colors–just imagine a kindergartner mixing two cans of paint to create this color–or more realistically the same color currently used to display Southwest on the tails today.
This could just be just part of the rumor mill, Monday will reveal the truth.
