Air France-KLM Flying Blue Frequent Flyer Program announced a NEW Elite level benefit today trying to increase loyalty and increase membership across the board. Barrowing from Delta’s SkyMiles program, Elite members who at least obtain Silver level status will be able to roll over addition elite qualify miles to the next calendar year, giving them an Elite boost the next qualification year.
Currently the flying blue has the follow threshold for required flights/segments:
Required thresholds for French and Monegasque residents
|Membership level||Number of Level Miles||Number of one-way flights*|
Required thresholds for the rest of the world
|Membership level||Number of Level Miles||Number of one-way flights**|
This means, with the new added benefit, a frequent flyer who flies 140,000 miles in one year would automatically qualify for Platinum the next calendar year and would only have to fly 1 flight to retain it. Or if you were to fly 50,000 miles, you would obtain Gold for the current program year (and sequential) and 10,000 miles would roll over, giving you a head start, making it much easier to re-qualify for Elite Status the following year.
The way KLM states it is
Get your year off to a flying start – make your Level Miles go further by carrying them over to next year.* Instead of resetting your Miles balance to zero, Flying Blue Silver members can now start the year with a positive account, as Level Miles earned above your level threshold will be saved after your Annual Level Check. This makes it easier for you to retain your current membership and achieve enough Level Miles for an upgrade!
* You must have made at least one Qualifying flight during the year.
Per the website, a qualifying flight is a flight on ANY Skyteam partner, it does not have to be a Air France or KLM flight, making it even easier to retain status and roll over miles.
So, do you find this to be generous or does it water down the Elite Program? With roll over miles, it ensures your EQM do not go to waste, but it also makes it easier to re-qualify and can potentially increase the number of Elites at the airline. Good or Bad? And why?
