Our October honeymoon begins in Mauritius, and we were really hoping to be able to book at the brand new St. Regis Mauritius. Thankfully, now we can! The St. Regis Mauritius has had its fair share of delays. The opening has been pushed back multiple times, but it looks like this time it’s for real, as the booking system is already open.
There are a bunch of great properties to redeem points at on the island of Mauritius. In Starwood land, there’s the Grand Mauritian and the Le Meridien Ile Maurice. Unfortunately, the Grand Mauritian suffered a fire last year, and it’s closed for renovation until further notice. Hilton has a property on Mauritius that looks quite nice, and we actually have a reservation on points there as a backup, in case the St. Regis doesn’t open in time.
The good news, besides the hotel actualy being bookable, is that it’s a Starwood Category 6. I was surprised by this. I thought it would be 7 or 8, especially considering the recent changes to the SPG award chart. That puts it at 20,000 points per night. Is that a lot? Yup. However, Mauritius is a one of a kind place (so I’ve heard) and this is their top of the line property, complete with personal butler service. It’s also great to hear that Starwood hasn’t classified this place as one of their “suites only” properties. A place like the W Maldives only offers suites, and so SPG thinks it’s fair to charge twice as much for those redemptions. Thus, a single night at the W Maldives is like 60,000 points.
Our stay is booked. I will, of course, deliver a full trip report afterwards. I’m excited to visit a new property only a couple weeks after opening – that’s something I haven’t had the chance to do yet!
